Nestled away in a vault behind a heavy
door in the old Jesuit residence of
the Gesu Church in Philadelphia is a
Catholic treasure – actually dozens of
treasures. This cramped vault serves as
home to what is fondly known as “The
Relic Wall” – an awe-inspiring collection
of relics of well-known and some notso-
well-known saints. Many of the
relics were brought to the location by
Fr. Joseph Greaton, SJ, the first resident
priest in Philadelphia in the 1700s.
The relics were catalogued in 1954 by
Fr. James McEnerney, SJ. St. Joseph’s
Preparatory School is renovating the
old Jesuit residence and plans to display
some of the relics. BELOW: The oldest
item on The Relic Wall dates to 1730
and is a relic of St. Francis Borgia. |
